2009-02-16 Milab presents the BDM-01

Milab BDM-01PRESS RELEASE:

The BDM-01 – a new bass drum condenser from Milab Microphones

Helsingborg, Sweden

The BDM-01 is a brand new bass drum microphone equally at home in the studio and on the road. The condenser capsule is hand built by Milab in Sweden and provides superb attack and high-frequency response, especially when compared to dynamic capsules, which can be found in most bass drum microphones.

The electronics have been specifically designed to handle the power of the most hard-hitting drummers - the BDM-01 takes 155 db without audible distortion. The dynamic range, frequency response, sensitivity and pop filters have been optimised for the sound and power of the bass drum and other bass instruments.

Features:

* Hand built cardioid condenser capsule
* Rubber fitted capsule
* Integrated pop protection
* High SPL handling
* Gold plated XLR-connector

The BDM-01 will be sold separately and as part of the Milab Drum Pack. The Drum Pack is an aluminium case with seven VM-44 Classics, shock mounts, mic holders, windscreens and now the BDM-01.

This new addition to the Milab product range will be presented at the Prolight + sound fair in Frankfurt. Visit Milab in Hall 8.0, Stand C05. Hosted by the Milab distributor for Germany - FBM Audio.

2009-01-21 Andreas Scholl and the Milab SRND 360 in unique recording

World-renowned german countertenor Andreas Scholl is considered as one of the great classical singers of his generation. Fanfare magazine says: "There are more excellent countertenors before the public today than ever before, but one stands out above all others, as Caruso among tenors a century ago: Andreas Scholl"

In November 2008 he recorded a concert in Leonhardskirche in Basel, Switzerland together with guitarist Crawford Young, using the Milab SRND 360, and was amazed by the sound and the flexibility of the surround microphone. Andreas was kind enough to write a personal review of the experience and share it with us.

Some quotes:

"The SRND sounds simply stunningly natural. The low noise-floor makes sure that even with soft sources noise won't ever be a problem. In a way I felt like getting the best of the precision and fast response of a small membrane mic combined with the slightly 'bigger' and 'rounder' sound of a high-end big membrane mic. The results of any instrument recorded through the Milab SRND will be natural and will create the 'being there' sensation that makes some recordings so special. Lute, guitar and voice were captured beautifully with all their individual qualities along with the detailed ambience of the church."

"The flexibilty of this microphone is simply amazing. Even if I need a stereo 'only' recording today, having all six signals recorded will give me the opportunity to create a surround mix later on, so in a way using the SRND gives you future-proof surround capacity with the simplicity of only one microphone to place in the concert hall."

"The fun started when I created a mix of the three front channels and two of the surround-channels in stereo. Adding a little of the centre-signal increased the presence of voice and instrument. It's like hearing more 'direct' sound while keeping the room-ambience. Moving the faders of the two surround-signals up enabled me to add more of the church ambience and 'widen' the mix. There are plenty of possibilities to adapt the sound of the recording while mixing and all of them use the original sound, recorded on the location. The results will certainly sound more natural than adding any artificial acoustics in the mix afterwards."

"To me this combination of the fantastic 'life-like' quality of the SRND combined with the enormous flexibility it brings to surround AND stereo-recordings makes it truly one of my favourites."
